Juan Hernandez will be seeking a third straight Del Mar riding title when the ninth Bing Crosby meeting opens today at the seaside oval.Six-time Del Mar jockey champion Flavien Prat and three-time Kentucky Derby champion John Velazquez will be riding at Del Mar’s four-week, 13-program fall meeting.“Both are on horses this weekend and will be here during the Turf Festival over the final two weekends,” said David Jerkens, Del Mar Thoroughbred Club racing secretary.
Hernandez will be aboard the Peter Miller-trained Handy Dandy in today’s feature — the $75,000 Let It Ride Stakes, a one-mile test on the turf for 3-year-olds. Handy Dandy is the morning-line favorite in the field of nine, which includes Script and St Anthony . The highlight of the fall meeting is the annual Turf Festival, a series of eight graded stakes that will be spread out over the final two weekends this season — climaxing with the Grade I Hollywood Derby for 3-year-olds on Saturday, Dec. 3, and the Grade I Matriarch Stakes for older fillies and mares on closing day . Each carries a $400,000 purse.
