On May 13, the song cycle written by Tasmanian composer Don Kay responding to poetry by Prince Edward Islander scholar Laurie Brinklow about the Tasmanian’s music will have its world premiere in P.E.I. It's a circle.
“It’s like this big circle,” Brinklow told me in an interview this week.
“So, talking to other islanders, I love … how these emotional things that you often can’t put into words are being expressed through creativity,” she said. “So, through him talking about that – and this happened so often when I was doing these interviews with artists and writers and musicians — I would say, ‘Oh my god, that sounds like a poem!’”
Laurie Brinklow credits librettist John Honey with guiding the collaboration between the P.E.I. poet and Australian composer Don Kay. Honey, right, and Kay, left, posed with their wives, the late Frances Kay, back left, and Maria Honey to celebrate the completion of one of their many other collaborations, the 2012 opera,"The Bushranger's Lover." - Contributed
Kay wrote, “Her response to the work itself was expressed very beautifully in poetic form. I therefore had set myself the strange task of responding to her response — a unique experience for me.”
