Joan Sullivan says 'Hollow Bamboo' from William Ping 'is an unusual hybrid — a mix of memoir, biography, fiction and fantasy.'
“Hollow Bamboo” is an unusual hybrid — a mix of memoir, biography, fiction and fantasy.Among them is a definition of “hollow bamboo” as “a pejorative to describe those of Chinese descent who identify more strongly with Western culture.”
Now, William Seto Ping was a real person and an important figure in Newfoundland and Labrador history. He arrived in Newfoundland in the 1930s, during the Depression, with the island administered under the Commission of Government. It was the time of the $300 head tax — per man, no women were allowed — and when Chinese immigrants were known as “celestials.
And then he is visited by a chimerical entity called Mo. After some back and forth, Mo begins to guide William on a journey towards and beside his grandfather, first touching on William’s own memories and then looping back to his grandfather’s childhood, through his early adulthood in China — cultured, enjoyable, then through the family dynamics that brought him to Newfoundland, with the original intent of staying a year, spelling an uncle who was already established here.
But I see Ping’s quandary. He wants to write about genuine people and tangible events, but there’s not enough facts, or those facts aren’t nutritious enough, for him to “get at” the story he wants to tell. Because he is part of this tale, too, though he and his grandfather didn’t really exist at the same time.
