Mike Lyons, who owns The Lyons Share Gallery in downtown Fairhope, likes to joke that “when you move to Fairhope, you have to buy a Jo Patton painting.” Her work, which is sold exclusively at his gallery, is so popular that it he can’t keep it on display. “We have to hurry and get it in a frame before it sells,” he says.
“We had a tiny kitchen on Bayview with a bar area,” she remembers. “The minute they left for school, I’d pull out my paints and paint until noon. As soon as I had my lunch, I’d put up my art supplies. I kept it separate as much as I could.” Jo is best known for capturing the piers that line the shore of Mobile Bay in her paintings, which are recognizable for her style and the rich, sometimes unexpected colors she uses. “Piers just fascinate me,” she says. “The old piers had so much character, leaning here and there.”
She also uses acrylics, which are “a little harsher in a lot of ways,” she says. “They dry so fast, and it’s harder to move them.” She has also dabbled in mixed media. “I do what I want to do now,” she says. Vicky knew she wanted “a Fairhope artist, someone who represented Fairhope,” to create the artwork for the platinum jubilee year of the festival, one of the oldest in the nation. “The painting sets the tone for the show. I felt like if anybody knew how to represent Fairhope over a 70-year period, it would be Jo. It was a no-brainer.”
