The grandson of former President Jimmy Carter and former first lady Rosalynn Carter told People magazine the couple are 'in the final chapter' of their lives.
In an interview published Saturday, Josh Carter said the atmosphere around his grandparents' home in Plains, Georgia, is quiet and calm."My grandparents have always been the entertainers," Josh Carter told the magazine."But now we're kind of the ones having to entertain. It’s different, it's just a different era."
In February, Jimmy Carter, 98, elected to enter hospice care. Three months later, it was announced that Rosalynn Carter, 96, has dementia. Josh Carter said there's been a close family member at the couple's house since the former president entered hospice. He's still"fully Jimmy Carter," Josh Carter said, though he is no longer as active as he used to be just a couple of years ago.
"Odds are I'm gonna lose my grandfather before my grandmother," Josh Carter said."He's in hospice care and she's not, and it's just math."Carter, the longest-lived United States president, has had multiple health problems in recent years, including cancer, which was successfully treated, and injuries stemming from falls.
Earlier this year, President Joe Biden inadvertently revealed that Carter had asked him to deliver the eulogy at his funeral.
