Adopted by a white family at two-years-old, the actor revisited his childhood and questioned how it had shaped his adult life

“Mrs Akingbola was involved in an argument about money and allowances at the offices of the department of health and social security. She eventually left the building, apparently abandoning her son,” he read. “That’s really hard.”

Retracing his formative steps and talking to black role models who also spent time in care, including Lennie James and Kriss Akabusi, the intensely personal documentary used Akingbola’s own experiences as a template to ask important questions.

“I wish you would have said something” said Akingbola’s foster brother as Akingbola recalled being threatened with a knife on a family holiday. “I didn’t want to spoil it for you,” Jimmy replied. Reflecting on the differences , the fraught conversation proved that, in situations like this, winners are few and far between.
