Jordan, a conservative firebrand who is allied with former president Donald Trump, was chosen by fellow Republicans on Friday to lead the House but must win a majority of the full chamber to take the gavel.
Rep. Debbie Lesko , a vocal defender of Donald Trump who was among the 147 Republicans who voted in 2021 to object to certifying Joe Biden’s win in the presidential election, said in a statement Tuesday night that she will not seek reelection next year. In her statement, Lesko cited her desire to spend more time with her family, adding, “Right now, Washington D.C. is broken; it is hard to get anything done.
In 2019 she railed against Democrats’ impeachment of Trump, calling it “the most unfair, corrupt, politically-biased railroad job in the history of the United States.” A year later, when Trump was impeached again, Lesko was one of eight members of Congress who formally defended him at the impeachment trial. “Democrats are playing politics, and they are playing dirty,” she said in a statement at the time.
