New York Jets coach Robert Saleh took a moment to honor the memory of Linden sophomore Xavier McClain before Friday's practice.
started his Friday news conference with a message to McClain’s family and those who knew him well.
“I just wanted to take a minute to honor the memory of Xavier McClain,” Saleh said. “On behalf of the Jets organization, heartfelt condolences to his mother Lisa, his father Norman, his brother Andres and the entire Linden community. It’s a sad day anytime you lose a member of the entire football community.”
McClain suffered the injury as he returned the kickoff to start the second half according to a person who was at the game but not authorized to speak publicly. His death was announced late Wednesday night by Linden Mayor Derek Armstead on social media.McClain made the starting lineup as a freshman and had become a key contributor for Linden. Before the injury in Linden’s 31-0 win over Woodbridge, McClain had two carries for 18 yards, a reception for eight yards, adding four tackles on defense.
Linden is scheduled set to play Perth Amboy at 7 p.m. Friday. No announcement has been made on a potential postponement of the game.
