Opinion: Local governments are acutely aware that we are building communities, not just housing.

There is an affordability crisis that is disproportionately impacting younger people, urban Indigenous peoples, and those in lower income brackets;There is a growing homelessness challenge, inextricably linked with addiction and mental health, that is present in communities throughout the province, not just the largest cities;Housing costs are a significant barrier to entry for new Canadians and out-of-province migration.

For example, the UBCM has long supported the incentivizing of secondary suites. Recently, the province earmarked up to $91 million across three years toward a new pilot program that will provide financial incentives to homeowners who add secondary rental suites to their primary residence. This will help add housing in existing neighbourhoods and provide an affordable housing option.
