Jefferson County Schools Superintendent Walter Gonsoulin 'reaffirms' support for 'all forms of voluntary religious expression to the fullest extent permitted by law.'

But Gonsoulin said in a statement Thursday that he and the Jefferson County Board of Education “reaffirms its commitment to supporting the right of members of the school community—and students, in particular—to engage in all forms of voluntary religious expression to the fullest extent permitted by law.

“The prayers that have been the subject of criticism by the Freedom From Religion Foundation were not scripted, edited, or sponsored by the Board, but were composed and led by students,” the statement from went on to say. “Public participation was uncoerced and wholly optional, and the prayers took place in a large, open, and noninstructional setting.”
