CNN president Jeff Zucker announced his sudden resignation on Wednesday morning after admitting to a romantic relationship with a senior colleague that he said he failed to report. The New York Times reports he was referring to Allison Gollust, CNN’s executive vice-president. The two began working together years ago at NBC when Zucker was in charge of the Today Show.
While prior reporting has suggested that Zucker and Gollust were involved, the announcement shocked staffers at the news network. “No one saw this coming,” one CNN insider told Intelligencer. The relationship with Gollust was uncovered during the network’s inquiry into former host Chris Cuomo’s alleged misconduct, which itself stemmed from an investigation into the alleged misconduct of his brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. Gollust announced Wednesday that she is remaining in her role as CNN’s executive vice-president and chief marketing officer. “Jeff and I have been close friends and professional partners for over 20 years,” she wrote.
Zucker, who took over at CNN in 2013, is one of the most powerful executives in media, gaining prominence during the Trump administration for rebuking the former president’s verbal attacks on the network. Prior to leading CNN, he served as president of NBC Entertainment, where he green-lit The Apprentice, the show that revived Donald Trump’s career.
