Japan's shock win over Germany reminds us what the World Cup is supposed to be like ✍️ We never saw this coming. Japan, who looked out of ideas having tried to change shape and change the mood, suddenly sprang into life 🟢 danielstorey85 GERJPN

Ilkay Gundogan’s penalty is cancelled out by Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano in another extraordinary upsetChief Football WriterAs the shriek of the final whistle sounded, referee Ivan Arcides Barton Cisnero raising both hands to the heavens, a nation did the same. This has been a remarkable week for Asian football and the shocks keep coming., the irrepressible chanting of the Japanese supporters finally ceased; but only because they were screaming at several octaves higher.

Is there a German word for when you dominate a game, missing chance after chance, and the weight of those missed chances dictates that you will eventually pay for such profligacy? Probably, but Hansi Flick would prefer it if you stayed quiet. This team, Flick’s team, was supposed to be different. Joachim Low did not lose his job after the catastrophe of 2018 in Russia, but it felt like the beginning of a long end. Flick brought with him a freshness that promised mistakes had been learnt.

If that can only be tested in the heightened tension of another World Cup, this was a terrible start. Germany knew that drawing Spain in the most difficult group required focus and professionalism against Japan. They promised much of both and delivered neither. Flick’s side were dominant for the first 70 minutes. They scored from an Ilkay Gundogan penalty and repeatedly pushed for a second goal. Jamal Musiala was the game’s best player, driving and dribbling past Japanese defenders. He created at least three chances and squandered a few more.
