Jonathan Munafo punched the officer so hard it “caused the officer’s head to snap back,” prosecutors said.
A New York state man who attacked a police officer in the Jan. 6 riot and stole his shield was sentenced to almost three years in prison Friday, federal prosecutors said.
He pleaded guilty in April to two federal felony charges — assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers and civil disorder. In addition to attacking the officer, he used a flag to try to smash a window at the Capitol. Munafo's federal public defender in the Jan. 6 case did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday night.
