House Committee subpoenas Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and YouTube over misinformation. Does it realize this may be a feature, not a bug?
“Two key questions for the Select Committee are how the spread of misinformation and violent extremism contributed to the violent attack on our democracy, and what steps — if any — social media companies took to prevent their platforms from being breeding grounds for radicalizing people to violence,” Committee chair Bennie Thompson said, in prepared remarks.
The same algorithms that understand user preferences to target ads or suggest products also recommend other forms of content. Such systems usually prioritize engagement, so people who like, share or comment on certain types of posts tend to see more of the same — welcome to the echo chamber effect. Of course, intentions vary from one company to the next, and so does their tech. That’s why painting all social networks with the same brush doesn’t necessarily offer an accurate view. A more nuanced assessment has been impossible, however, because their inner workings are closely guarded secrets.whistleblower Frances Haugen revealed how the platform morphed into an “angrier place” in 2018, following a major update to the recommendations algorithm that elevated polarizing content.
