ICYMI - Jamie Sarkonak: Toronto principal bullied over false charge of racism dies from suicide
A day after the second training session, Bilkszto fell into a mental health crisis so bad that he had to spend more than a month away from work — for which he won a successful workers’ compensation claim for lost earnings. Shortly after his leave began, his association of education administrators asked the board to investigate the bullying incident, but the board refused.
Bilkszto, by all accounts, was a dedicated professional who lived for education. He had no children of his own — but still played a strong part in bringing up the next generation in the school system. His postings weren’t exactly typical; Bilkszto was a specialist in adult education, working in schools where students were aged 18 and above.
Former student Ahmed Patel, who at one point in his life risked being kicked out of high school, credited Bilkszto for his graduation the City Adult Learning Centre in Toronto and later admission into university. Patel said, Bilkszto’s approach to education was all about “giving people second chances.”
Aside from his work as an educator, Bilkszto was an advocate. He was a member of the Toronto chapter of the Foundation Against Intolerance and Racism , an advocacy organization dedicated to civil rights and anti-discrimination, whichin establishing. In education specifically, he was a member of SOS TDSB, an organization working to preserve the district’s merit-based admissions system for specialty programs .
More personally, he was a dedicated caretaker for his mother. Despite living a few hours away from her own residence, he visited her nearly every weekend — and used the drive to catch up with the many friends in his circle. Further to that, he was a devoted uncle to his niece and two nephews.“Our hearts go out to Richard’s family and loved ones,” read the statement from TDSB spokesman Ryan Bird.
Questions linger. What Bilkszto experienced was clearly bullying — and worse, with no defence from leadership. How was it that nobody spoke up?
