Following David Corenswet's casting in Superman: Legacy, James Gunn gives a blunt response to one of the oldest debates about the DC Comics icon.
James Gunn chimes in with an unexpected response to fans arguing about how Superman's costume should look in Superman: Legacy. The DC Universe is set to be one of Warner Bros. Discovery's biggest priorities, as DC Studios is ending the DCU in favor of a new shared franchise. The first proper DC Universe film will be Superman: Legacy, starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent, a.k.a. the new Man of Steel.
While filming on Superman: Legacy won't start until 2024, it hasn't stopped fans from speculating how the reboot will reinvent the DC icon, including what this version of the costume will look like in the film. As Gunn has been answering various DC Universe questions over social media, the filmmaker recently gave quite an interesting reply.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT A Threads user, @Boytopiaa asked if they will "know if Corenswet's Superman will be wearing the trunks or not by the end of this year," as his casting revived one of the oldest DC debates of all time. Without saying yes or no, Gunn still gave a blunt answer, saying that it is "not really one of my priorities.
For some fans, the trunks are just an essential part of Superman's costume, while others are simply not looking at that aspect of his suit as important. It would likely be a bigger issue if Gunn made a massive change to, for example, the cape, or the colors of the actual suit. But in general, every Superman costume in live-action has always stuck to having a red cape and blue bodysuit, as that look continues to work while the S-shield has been designed differently.
At the end of the day, Superman: Legacy's success will obviously not be determined by whether or not Clark has the trunks on the outside of his suit or not. As long as they have a strong story, powerful actors, and wise direction, that is what will make the reboot a hit. Hopefully, before the year is over, Superman: Legacy will reveal Corenswet's official costume before they start filming.
