Star Elizabeth Stanley hopes the musical (inspired by Alanis Morissette’s 1995 album) can 'help move the conversation forward'

As the matriarch Mary Jane, Stanley brings some of the most shocking and heartbreaking moments to the stage, all while making you believe she has it completely together. Whether it’s her desperate attempts to connect with her daughter or a “rewind” scene performed entirely in reverse, keeping that level of emotional and physical output night after night has been no easy task.
In order to understand the more sensitive aspects of Mary Jane’s story—past traumas, addiction, being the mother of an adopted child—Stanley says her fellow cast members and “a bunch of books” were instrumental. More than two decades after the album’s release, Morissette’s songs bring the production together in unapologetic glory, evoking nostalgia among those who grew up screaming her songs in their cars and welcoming new fans to experience her lyrics and message for the first time. Although Stanley didn’t own the album when it originally came out, it was impossible for her to ignore the songs that made Morissette an icon, as they played on repeat across the country.
