The White Stripes formally ceased during 2011, and White has gone on to a successful solo career and has started the bands Dead Weather and the Raconteurs.
During Wednesday’s 40-minute discussion White spoke about an array of topics related to the lyrics, including the impact Detroit had on him during his early days as a songwriter. “As much as I love Detroit and always will, it was a rough place in a negative way,” explained White, who attended Cass Technical High School before launching his music career in bands such as The Go, Goober & the Peas and Two-Star Tabernacle. “But there’s a lot to be taken from that.
Answering a question from the crowd, White acknowledged that having the White Stripes lyrics packaged together gave him a more holistic perspective on that work. “So as time rolls on you’re changing your perspective over and over and over again, and now it’s not the first time I wrote it or the 10th time I wrote it. It’s the 500th time or something crazy like that.”
