There have been too many occasions when the PM has said one thing and events have later proven him to have been economical with the truth.

According to the Angus Reid Institute, 63 per cent of Canadians approved of Trudeau in December 2015. Seven years later, that number had fallen to 43 per cent, with a clear majority disapproving of him and his performance.Article content

It would be shady but understandable if the mendacity was limited to broken promises on policy issues like electoral reform — a pledge the NDP says the Liberals made 1,800 times in the 2015 campaign, before abandoning it.Article content In the SNC Lavalin case, Trudeau again assured Canadians that he was right and the allegations — that he improperly influenced then justice minister Wilson-Raybould to intervene in a criminal case — were wrong. “The allegations reported in the story are false,” he said.

Why would anyone take anything he says on faith after all that? The most valuable commodity a politician can have is trust, and it is non-renewable. Polls suggest the majority of Canadians have become disillusioned. His suggestion that it undermines our democracy to even raise questions about the panel of senior bureaucrats assigned to monitor elections for foreign interference is self-serving drivel. As my colleague Ryan Tumilty established in, where he interviewed two former clerks of the privy council, the election review process is subjective and fallible.

The leaked documents make it clear that the security services were aware of, and worried about, such efforts.
