An IU team that spent its offseason dreaming big dreams and setting big goals has never looked less capable of realizing them than it does right now.
IU basketball players Jalen Hood-Schifino and Trayce Jackson-Davis meet with media following Hoosiers' home loss to Northwestern on Sunday.BLOOMINGTON – Perhaps, whether it’s been intended or not, Mike Woodson’s choice of words in recent weeks has acted as a subtle tell., Woodson’s Hoosiers have now dropped five of their past six games against high-major opponents, including their first two league games after the Big Ten restart.
“We’ve just got to regroup,” senior forward Trayce Jackson-Davis said. “We’ve got to come out strong, and guys have got to be ready to play. That’s the easiest way to put it.” Turnovers , points allowed from turnovers and four Wildcats scoring in double figures were the main talking points in what unfolded into a defensive calamity.
Read back what Jackson-Davis said there: “When you don’t listen to your coaches, that’s going to really hurt you.”over the course of a season. Not every word they say is carefully chosen, nor every possible interpretation considered. But considering the disconnect between not just how Indiana believes it can play but also how we’ve seen the Hoosiers play, and how they’re playing now, it’s easy to believe Woodson isn’t singing from the same hymn sheet as his roster right now.
Despite playing with a bad back, Jackson-Davis has seven blocks in that stretch. He pulled in an eye-popping 24 boards Sunday, the most by any Hoosier in a single game in more than 50 years. “Xavier Johnson and Race Thompson are sitting on the sideline, and X has been out a while now, who anchors in guarding the ball coming up the floor and does a lot of pretty good things defensively for us,” he said. “That's why we're struggling a little bit defensively. We've got two starters that are sitting on the sideline, and I'm reaching trying to figure out who's going to replace that.
