Hispanic women earn 54 cents on the dollar compared to white men, which means they have to work ten and a half more months in order to earn the same annual salary that a white man earns.

, a day of awareness that highlights this disparity, is so important. The fact is, while the pay gap affects all women, it doesn’t affect us all equally. Latinas suffer the gap more profoundly than any other group of women, making 8 cents less on the dollar than black women, 27 cents less than white women and 35 cents less than Asian women. Why? Because with a population numbering 60 million, Latinos are the second-largest demographic group in the country—and a driving force in our economy.

The numbers don’t lie: The Hispanic population of the United States is growing more powerful every day. But to many Latinas, it sure doesn’t feel that way. That was the lesson Claudia Romo Edelman learned when she moved to the United States five years ago. “I was very excited I was going to be a part of this incredible majority of 60 million Hispanics in the United States, accounting for 18% of the total population and 12% of the GDP,” Claudia recalls.
