“We’re going to win this, but we’re not close,” says GovMurphy of New Jersey. “Everyone’s got to remember, it’s a marathon we’re running here, not a sprint”

we learn about the federal government’s sluggish, waffling, ham-fisted management of the most devastating public health crisis the world has seen in a hundred years, the more many citizens embrace the aggressive, unwavering, steady-handed responses playing out at the state level—certain states, at least. Governors

I hope the latter, but it could be the former. Putting testing aside for a second—beds, personal protective equipment, ventilators, health care workers, we’re short on all. There’s just no other way to put it. We’re turning over every stone. Getting the health care workers is largely a call to arms which I’ve made personally. Folks are signing up on the website we’ve got, covid19.nj.gov. As it relates to beds, Army Corps, FEMA, thank God they’re alongside of us.

No question it will lead to a meaningful reduction in cases and in fatalities. There’s no question about it. But what I can’t tell you is how meaningful and when. We’re as aggressive as any American state, and we did it in a couple of phases. The most recent phase, which was probably the most draconian, was 13 days ago. This is an important thing to keep in mind on states that have stay-at-home policies.

Do we have now what we need from the federal government? An absolute no, we do not. We’ve gotten some stuff, which I’m thankful for, and there’s no denying we’ve gotten several shipments of PPE. We’ve gotten over the past month three different ventilator shipments, and I’m thankful for that. But it’s a fraction of what we need. There’s just no two ways about it. So both of those statements can be true. We’ve got a good relationship, but we don’t have what we need yet.
