Matthews didn’t score in a five-game span from Oct. 15-24, marking his longest slump of 2022-23, and he went on to finish with 40 goals in 74 games.
While Keefe acknowledged that Matthews’ focus remains sharp, there’s some effort that comes with keeping it in line as the zero hasn’t budged from the goal column. “If you want to continue to win as a team, you have to adhere to the things that allow you to do that. He has to pick his spots offensively, but can’t sacrifice on the other side of it because we can’t forget about the team we’re playing their ability to transition and counter.”The Leafs’ offence has come under the microscope with their run of two-goal games. It’s six games in a row that Toronto has scored no more than two.
Mitch Marner and William Nylander scored in the 2-1 win in Game 4 to keep the Leafs alive. It’s Matthews’ turn to be that guy, and for that matter, John Tavares hasn’t scored in the series either.Article content
