Tiny diary gives day\u002Dto\u002Dday details about a miner’s life 165 years ago.

His brother cooked him a salmon and potatoes, and the following day he made an important connection, meeting O.T. Travaillot, the gold licence collector at Forks in the Interior, which was renamed Lytton in August. On July 20 he boarded a ship for a “pleasant” 12-hour voyage to Frazer’s River. After he landed, he set up a tent and ate “boiled bacon and molasses.”

The small details of day-to-day life appealed to Alexander Globe, a retired University of B.C. English professor who owns the diary and has consigned it to Grant Duff.. It’s based on the four known diaries of the Fraser River Gold Rush. Globe has spent countless hours trying to find the name of author of the diary, which also includes later writing from two other people. One is Nelson Landon of Gananoque, Ont. near Kingston, the other seems to be an unknown descendent of the miner.“It looks like somebody put lighter fluid to it, started to burn it and then put the flame out. What is legible is that the diarist drowned in the Cariboo after 1858. The diary itself arrives in Gananoque in 1861, so he drowned in 1859-1860-1861.
