Why even the smallest acts of compassion are deeply appreciated
To be sure, these examples do not eliminate the conflict or the issues underlying it, but they do show the power of small acts of kindness and understanding. In this post, I’d like to highlight findings from research in behavioral science to provide what I believe is a glimmer ofSpecifically, consider the following situation. A person is given a certain amount of money, say $10, and offered the opportunity to divide it with another, a stranger.
The question researchers asked is how we evaluate each of these trade-offs. Clearly, we would like someone who split the money more than someone who keeps all of it for themselves. But what about the other extreme—would we like someone who gives everything away more than someone who splits the money evenly?
There are of course many reasons people engage in acts of kindness beyond how people evaluate them—people are altruistic because they want to effect change, help others, or realize a sense of meaning in their lives. But these results do suggest that getting people’s appreciation is not difficult. You do not need to rise to the levels of Mother Teresa or other extreme benefactors—simply being a “little bit” nice goes a long way.
