In 2022, 133 paramedics left work in Nova Scotia for reasons other than retirement. - Tim Krochak / FileThe province of choice for paramedics? It doesn’t appear to be Nova Scotia.

Kevin MacMullin, business manager for the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 727, said it’s been tough to keep paramedics onboard.MacMullin said there are multiple reasons why paramedics are leaving the job in Nova Scotia, but the main reason is the pay difference. “The money was largely better and I was burnt out in Nova Scotia,” said the woman, who wished to remain anonymous.

The report released by the Health Department did note, however, 25 paramedics were later rehired in 2021 and 28 paramedics were rehired in 2022. Khalehla Perrault, spokeswoman for the Nova Scotia Health Department, said the provincial government knows compensation is important for paramedics and will be an item discussed at the negotiation table.
