New York officials are ramping up security at synagogues and yeshivas, Gov. Kathy Hochul said, as tensions grow over the war between Israel and Hamas. The state, home to about two million Jewish people, has been on edge as protests have erupted. More demonstrations are scheduled in the coming days.
Synagogues across the state have posted more security guards outside and considered moving services online. Rebecca Weiner, the New York Police Department’s deputy commissioner of intelligence and counterterrorism, addressed the city’s heightened security measures in a television interview Thursday. “This is not done because we anticipate violence or because we are anticipating an imminent threat,” she said. “This is really about making sure people feel safe.
