Israel's military massed troops on the border with Gaza as airstrikes pummeled the Palestinian enclave in the wake of Saturday's attack by Hamas.
Chants of “Free, Free Palestine” echoed through Times Square in midtown Manhattan on Friday as Palestinian supporters, waving signs and green, red, black and white flags, filled three blocks along Broadway near 42nd Street. “I support a free Palestine, but I don’t condone the attacks from Hamas, no way,” said Marcelo Taboada, who is from Buenos Aires and attended the pro-Palestinian rally.
“Nobody who defends the Palestinian cause seriously could support what Hamas did.” Across 42nd Street, a group of Israel supporters waved blue and white flags. The two groups remained separated by cars and police officers, who kept traffic moving along 42nd Street as rush hour approached. New York Police Department barriers kept the protesters from spilling into the busy sidewalks lined with officers and gawking tourists.
