The Gaza militant group launched its biggest sustained assault in years, prompting Israel's military to call up reservists and order retaliatory strikes.
Hamas is the militant group that controls the Gaza Strip, a densely populated coastal Palestinian enclave. The territory is the size of Washington, D.C., and home to more than two million people. Hamas, which the U.S. considers a terrorist organization, has ruled the Gaza Strip since 2007 and fought four wars against Israel since taking power.
Israel then launched a campaign of airstrikes that resulted in the killing of more than 250 people in Gaza. On the Israeli side, 14 civilians and one soldier were killed. During the escalation, Israeli forces destroyed a high-rise building in Gaza City that housed the offices of several news organizations, including the Associated Press and Al Jazeera. That round of fighting ended after 11 days with an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire.
