Some of the confusion around cable types has to do with labeling, he added. The USB Implementers Forum, which markets and supports the USB standard, has created logos and labels that indicate which cables do what, but many sellers don’t use them. And some of the logos don’t make much sense. For example, USB-C cables that support video may have a logo with a stylized “SS”. Exactly how a consumer is supposed to know that means video-capable is not clear.
And it’s not just Apple, he said. Many Windows-based laptops are sold with USB-C cables and no clear indication that they won’t work with video.You might think that, in a newer device with some smarts, that you’d get a notification that the cable you’re trying isn’t the right type. But usually, Leung said, all you see is a blank screen.
