Is Mavericks’ trade of Kristaps Porzingis a sign of growth from Mark Cuban? | KSherringtonDMN
Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban cheers a basket during the first half of an NBA basketball game against the Sacramento Kings at American Airlines Center on Sunday, Oct. 31, 2021, in Dallas.Kristaps Porzingis recently sent a bettor an autographed jersey as a make-up call for blowing a layup that cost the guy a $76,000 parlay. Classy, right? Except the bettor put the jersey up for auction, which should cover his $100 investment anyway.
The start of the Mavs’ new era didn’t get off to a good start, a pratfall noted in this space in November. Practically wrote them off. Since then, the Mavs have reinvented themselves as a defense-first team, a remarkable development also chronicled here. Still, when rumors popped up again in November suggesting the Mavs might be shopping KP, Cuban couldn’t have been more dismissive in an interview with“Why would I do that at all?” he said. “Trades like that, you always end up further behind. When you trade a superstar, you never get the best end of it. I’ve always believed that KP hasn’t played his best basketball yet. Now you’re seeing why we didn’t trade him. He’s a great player. He’s a good dude.
No matter what you may have heard Tuesday, listening to Cuban talk about the deadline deal on the Ticket, he didn’t want to trade KP.Listening to him Tuesday, Cuban sounded a lot less like the guy who practically called KP untradeable in November and a lot more like the GM who recently rationalized it as a two-for-one.
