Feinstein, out since early March over a bout with shingles, hasn’t given a timeline for her return, and Democrats are “getting more and more worried.”

on Friday. Leaders of the progressive grassroots group Indivisible urged her last week to “allow a new appointee to carry forth and extend your legacy.”

And then the horrific scene at a mall in Texas, where a gunman killed eight people and injured six more using an assault weapon. In one of her only public comments about the controversy, Feinstein issued a statement Thursday, pushing back on criticism that she’s holding up her party’s judiciary appointments.

“He’s all but begging her to make a decision,” Schnur said. “They’re getting somewhat panicked back there. If you listen to Durbin’s interview, it’s clear that the leadership desperately wants her to step down, but just doesn’t want to say so out loud.” In early March, Feinstein said she’d been hospitalized for shingles, a painful viral rash that can strike older adults who’ve had chickenpox. On March 7, Feinstein said in a statement she was recovering at home and looked forward to returning to the Senate “as soon as possible.”

Things are closer in committees like Judiciary, where Feinstein’s absence leaves it split 10 Democrats to 10 Republicans. But Feinstein said in her statement that the committee still has advanced eight district and circuit court nominees during her absence.
