The documentary series' first season was released in July 2021 and followed McNamara's career as a surfer and his involvement with the town of Nazaré, Portugal where he hoped to surf a 100-foot wave.
Season 1 primarily follows McNamara, telling his backstory and exploring what drives someone to pursue a dangerous and nearly impossible dream. 100 Foot Wave season 2 interweaves multiple stories of different surfers who battle restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic to earn a livelihood surfing all across the world.
The stories in 100 Foot Wave season 2 also remain engaging. The juxtaposition of McNamara's desire to surf professionally and remain a present and good father was one of the most fascinating aspects of season 1, but critics agree that the storylines in season 2 are affecting in their own way. A reviewer from Outside Magazine says about season 2, "It discusses the challenging personal dynamics that often exist between a surfer and his or her jet-ski driver," and "...
One review from The Telegraph reads, "...series two feels more meandering, flitting between different characters but never quite getting under their skin." It was always going to be difficult to find as compelling a story as the one that named the documentary series. However, despite this, critics overall still consider 100 Foot Wave season 2 worth the six-episode investment. Its strength of story, new surfers, and one-of-a-kind filming make it must must-watch TV.
