A partial audio recording appears to show the Irvington mayor and township attorney offering a job promotion and salary increase to a municipal worker — in exchange for the worker’s wife dropping her 2014 sex harassment claim against the mayor and the town

“I don’t agree with it,” said Golden Robinson, a longtime Irvington resident. “You get a job on your merits.”

A variety of federal and state corruption laws forbid offering taxpayer resources in return for personal benefit, but former prosecutors say the legality of the mayor’s conduct depends on his intent. Township Attorney Ramon Rivera, who did much of the talking on the audio recording, emailed a statement defending the settlement negotiations.
