Happy InternationalWomensDay Here's just 20 of the many amazing inspirational women we've featured on InYourArea.

From Southport

There is one piece of advice her teachers gave her that Irene is so glad she ignored:"I distinctly remember being told by them that I shouldn't look to be a children's nurse because it was too sad, but I'm glad I never took their advice!", and from there took on several vital roles, including becoming a sister in A&E before her current position as a specialist nurse in VTE and anticoagulation.

But Irene doesn't show any signs of slowing down as she's just completed her re-evaluation, which means she'll be nursing for another three years - and hopefully more. As you'd expect from such a long career, Irene's got loads of stories to tell, both happy and sad.She recalls:"I was doing a transfer over to Alder Hey with a baby that was just a few weeks old. The baby was having apnoeic attacks and was extremely unwell, and mum and dad were with me in the ambulance.

"Some 18 months later, I was walking through town when two ladies stopped me with a toddler in a pram. One of the ladies hugged me and told me I had saved her baby's life that night. "I was completely overwhelmed, and even thinking about it now brings tears to my eyes. These are the reasons why I love being a nurse, knowing that I have supported people and given my all to making a difference in their lives."
