A Filipino navy sailor was injured during a “high-speed ramming” incident in the South China Sea involving a Chinese coast guard ship. While Filipino authorities deemed it an “intentionally aggressive” act during a standard resupply mission, Chinese officials contested the claim, alleging an unprofessional approach on the part of the Filipino vessel, which necessitated the use of “warnings and blockades, boarding inspections, and forced evictions.
The Philippine military said in a statement the Chinese coast guard's"continued aggressive behavior and unprofessional conduct towards a legitimate humanitarian mission is unacceptable." The Philippine ship was attempting to deliver supplies to a tiny military outpost on the Second Thomas Shoal, constructed from the hulk of a ship called the BRP Sierra Madre that was deliberately run aground in 1999, when a Chinese coast guard vessel rammed it.
