How Tari Eason made it to Rockets and NBA: a drive to show he belonged

LSU coaches said they discovered that Tari Eason, dunking against Kentucky, was a very goal-oriented person. The name Tari Eason did not dominate predraft discussions, but it acquired a new heft when announced as the Rockets' 17th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft.

Eason’s path differed from that of the Rockets’ two other first-round picks. He is not like Jabari Smith Jr., the son of an NBA player, or TyTy Washington, a former five-star recruit ranked top 20 in his class.Eason did not play for a storied grassroots program backed by a giant apparel company. Despite the videos his mother routinely sent to recruiting services after every 30-point game, he was tabbed a four-star prospect, not a five-star.

“You knew he had a real high upside,” Berry said. “He worked really hard on the ball on extending the court, bringing people away from the basket. The sky's the limit with the kid. He's in a great situation where they're gonna have to play him a lot because they got o a youth movement. And I think they got a diamond in the rough.”

In one game against Washington Supreme, a powerhouse grassroots program in the area, Eason offered a preview of the rim-rattling slams he would showcase years later in college. Out of Seattle’s Garfield High School, where he was coached by former NBA player Brandon Roy, Eason received scholarship offers from programs including Southern California, Washington State and Colorado. He committed to Cincinnati and averaged 7.3 points as the Bearcats went 12-11 in a tumultuous season after which head coach John Brannen was fired and multiple players transferred.
