Pat Corcoran, the longtime manager behind Chance the Rapper, has started his own record label, Nice Work. The Warner Records-backed venture will allow its artists to have creative control, give them the right to own their master recordings, and offer major label support.
Haight Brand, Corcoran’s management firm, was the center of Chance’s endeavors. The company’s name was derived from the San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, the birthplace of the counterculture movement in the 1960s.
At the time, Corcoran saw his defiant approach to the music business as equally radical. Publicly refusing to advise his artist to sign an unfavorable record deal forced his team to rely on relationships and thriftiness. In tandem with his management responsibilities, Corcoran will head his own record label, Nice Work. The venture is backed by Warner Records and headquartered in Chicago. 99 Neighbors, a collective of creatives from Vermont, was announced as its first signing.
The necessity to produce something out of nothing is embedded in Corcoran’s DNA. In addition to the wine business he co-founded, No Fine Print, he says he’s in the process of starting more companies. He is also involved in the creation of a 12,000 square-foot space built to service Chicago-area creatives. It will house a studio, a soundstage for music videos and photoshoots, and executive offices.
