ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The Department of Justice and Public Safety says it was notified of a death at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary the night of Tuesday, Aug.
“The department wishes to express sincere condolences to the person’s family and friends as well as staff and inmates at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary during this difficult time,” a statement from the department read.
“It would be inappropriate to comment further while next of kin are being notified and an investigation is underway.” In 2019, the provincial government released an independent review of inmate deaths in Newfoundland and Labrador prisons, after four inmates — Douglas Neary, Skye Martin, Samantha Piercey and Christopher Sutton — died at HMP and the women's correctional centre in Clarenville between August 2017 and June 2018.
"Newfoundland and Labrador Corrections and Community Services: Deaths in Custody Review" highlighted new and longstanding issues within the provincial prison facilities.Share story:
