The Blue Jays will be without Danny Jansen after the catcher fractured a finger behind the plate during a game against the Rockies in Denver on Friday. It was less than half an hour of Blue Jays baseball that captured the promising highs and agonizing lows of Danny Jansen’s professional career.
It was just the latest example of the power Jansen has always believed he’s had and has flashed more regularly as he’s become comfortable with the exhausting regimen of being a big-league hitter.Less than a half inning later came the latest low point of a career that has had too many. When Jansen took a foul ball off his hand, he fractured the middle finger on his right hand. And so begins yet another trip to the injured list, his fourth in the past two seasons.
It’s a big blow for a team already without its best hitter, Bo Bichette, and its top defender, Matt Chapman. Complementing the Jansen power was a knack to make those bigger blows count in critical game situations. That said, for a team that had for the most part been healthy through the long season, Jansen’s loss will be a costly one.
“Last year I feel like I made a lot of mistakes when it came to how I approached the season,” Bassitt said at the Rogers Centre before the Jays departed for a six-game road trip. “I feel that at the end of the season I completely ran out of gas.
