While breastfeeding, Olivia Frantz, then 27, noticed her breast had become red and inflamed and her skin looked different. At first, doctors thought she had mastitis, a swelling in the breast usually caused by an infection. When antibiotics did not work, she underwent tests and learned she had a rare, aggressive type of breast cancer, called inflammatory breast cancer.
“What we see is that this cancer can grow and change very, very fast, much faster than other non-inflammatory types of breast cancer,” Layman says. “We can sometimes notice a change from one week to the next, which we typically would not see with a non-inflammatory breast cancer.” Like other breast cancers, doctors use a combination of therapies to treat inflammatory cancers. Typically treatment includes chemotherapy, surgery, then radiation.
