By Tuesday the toll had risen to 268 dead in the 5.6-magnitude earthquake, whose shallow depth of just six miles ensured maximum havoc.
At a news conference on Tuesday, Lt. Gen. Suharyanto, the head of the National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure , said “as many as 122 have been identified” of the victims but he warned that another 151 people were still missing.The regional governor, Ridwan Kamil, said that the majority of the dead were children, but BNPB spokesman Abdul Muhari said it was too early to tell.
“It was a busy time for them in the middle of the afternoon,” he said, adding that the children in his village seem to be in a state of shock and were afraid to go home for fear that their houses would collapse on them. “They will need help to get over what happened and accept it.”Located about 45 miles from the capital, Jakarta, the mountainous Cianjur area is densely populated and home to about 2.2 million residents.
By Tuesday, rescue efforts were slowly gaining pace, with trucks and earthmovers brought in from nearby cities to search for victims beneath the mud and rubble, and to clear blocked roads.
