I think the coyotes are exacting revenge for the obstacles I installed to keep them out of my backyard. It’s true that they had been quite cozy under my deck having pups, and more pups, and so on.
Tonight’s walk was a little later than usual. This happens to me a lot during daylight saving time when I get carried away and think I have all night to walk in the light. Once again, dusk caught up with me along with a strapping coyote racing across the road. He looked like he was in his prime – lean and strong with a way too self-assured gait. Definitely quarterback material.
“Wow, he’s a big one” came a soft voice from behind me. It’s officially “don’t startle the wildlife” time. The voice moved closer to me in the form of a pretty blond woman about half my age, a tiny dog on a leash by her side. I was tempted to reach out and hug this complete stranger who appeared so calm in contrast to my frozen-in-place panic.
