April is the best time to start your summer vegetable garden, from seed or from seedlings
Along the coast, continue to plant ornamental trees, vines, succulents and shrubs.Plant these wonderful drought tolerant garden vines:
- Island Morning Glory is native to California’s Channel Islands. This exuberant, fast-growing vine reaches 20 to 30 feet long. Its white to pale pink morning glory-like flowers bloom from winter through early summer. The vine sleeps once the heat sets in. Plant in full sun along the coast, afternoon shade or dappled light inland. Provide a strong support system. Cut vines back in summer.
If you plant black plastic nursery containers, drape them in light colored fabric so the intense sunlight doesn’t heat the pot and cook the roots.- A 15-gallon black nursery pot has room for one tomato plant or two pepper plants or eggplant plants or basil plants.two tomatoes or three peppers, or three eggplant plants, or three basil plants. Alternatively, plant three cucumber plants or one squash plant or five cilantro plants.
Thin any marble-size fruits on mature stone fruit, apple and pear trees. Too many fruits on a branch make for small fruits. For larger fruits, thin to just one fruit along every 4 to 6 inches of branch. Compost the thinned fruits.

AP source: Fetterman expected back to Senate in AprilPennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman will return to the Senate in April, two months after the freshman Democrat sought inpatient treatment for clinical depression, a person close to Fetterman said Wednesday. The person, who was not authorized to discuss Fetterman’s plans and spoke on condition of anonymity, said Fetterman will return the week of April 17. It was not immediately clear when Fetterman will leave Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where he checked in Feb. 15 after weeks of what aides described as Fetterman being withdrawn and uninterested in eating, discussing work or the usual banter with staff.
