Mayor Bill de Blasio’s quest for campaign donations has entangled his presidential bid in a decades-long dispute over succession rights in New York City's Orthodox Jewish Satmar community

Mayor Bill de Blasio’s quest for campaign donations has entangled his presidential bid in a decades-long dispute over succession rights in New York City's Orthodox Jewish Satmar community.

“Please help out with the one-dollar campaign so that he can get into the Democratic debate,” reads an image of a poster emailed to POLITICO, according to a translator who is fluent in Yiddish. “The mayor promises that the new [synagogue] will be open for [us] ahead of the upcoming Sukkos holiday.” The correspondence, professionally translated by Arun Viswanath for POLITICO, indicates the Zalman faction secured a commitment from de Blasio to have his Department of Buildings allow construction to move forward on the property, which has been stalled for a decade by a stop-work order.“Any allegations of quid pro quo activity are completely false and inaccurate. As always, decisions are made strictly based on merit,” said mayoral spokesperson Avery Cohen. The stop-work order is still in place.

“He’s not going to do crazy things. He’s running for president,” he added. “All eyes are open on him.”“It would be nice if [they] wanted to do damage, at least let the mayor get a few dollars,” he added. “You want to do damage to him, at least let him get $50.”
