A spacecraft that launched in April 2023 will fly across Southeast Asia and the Pacific Ocean tonight conducted the first-ever lunar-Earth flyby—and immediately

The Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer, which left Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana on an Ariane 5 rocket on April 14, 2023, is destined for Jupiter to conduct flybys of three of the giant planet's moons. However, a spacecraft never heads in a straight line across the solar system; instead, it conducts circular orbits of planets to collect what are known as gravity-assists.According to NASA, a gravity assist—a slingshot—is when a spacecraft's velocity is increased, propelling it outward in the solar system. In effect, the spacecraft borrows a planet's own orbital speed. That's exactly happened overnight on Aug.

Changing JUICE's speed will alter its direction, as well. So it's both the first-ever lunar-Earth flyby and the first-ever double gravity assist manoeuver, according to theFor JUICE, it's part of a long 4.1 billion-mile journey to Jupiter. Completely solar-powered, the spacecraft will take eight years in total to reach the Jovian System. After this initial Earth-moon flyby, it will do something similar at Venus in Aug. 2025 before conducting two more Earth flybys in Sept.

It will finally arrive at Jupiter in July 2031, orbiting Jupiter 67 times, during which it will fly close to Europa, Callisto and Ganymede—three of Jupiter's largest moons—before finally going into orbit around Ganymede.23:15 CEST on 19 August 2024, soon after Juice made its closest approach to the Moon. On the right we see parts of our spacecraft.
