Alex finally finds work as a maid, a job that takes her from some of the scummiest to some of the poshest corners of her community, and offers her an unvarnished glimpse into lives that look nothing like hers. Reaching the kind of stability and comfort that her richer clients take for granted seems an impossible prospect, and yet it is also tantalizingly close: On one occasion, when a client is out of town, Alex wears her cashmere and drinks her wine.
