Heading into the Olympics this week, many of the skaters will proudly wear the costumes they’ve been working on all year. To create them, they began by identifying their music choice, working with their choreographers, and then enlisting their respective costume designers to create sketches around their programs. “You don’t really plan anything costume-wise until the program is done,” says Brandon Frazier, an American athlete who skates as a pair with Alexa Knierim.
Even with all these technical details, though, figure-skating costumes also need to be innately dazzling. “We want to make sure it’s eye-catching, photographs well, and is pleasing to the eye for the audience and the judges,” says Brown. Embellishments and rhinestones are often used to achieve this, but even those can have their technical downsides. “Stoning adds a lot of weight, so you definitely don’t go overboard with it,” Zhou says.
