Nursing-home fatalities boost official death toll from virus by more than 40% in France

PARIS—France has become one of the first countries in the world to systematically report the impact of the new coronavirus in its nursing homes, raising the nation’s official death toll from the virus by more than 40%.

France is pressing nursing homes across the country—7,000 institutions housing 600,000 elderly people—to report deaths of confirmed or suspected coronavirus patients to health authorities.
