“Certain dates echo throughout history, including dates that instantly remind all who have lived through them where they were and what they were doing when our democracy came under assault.'

. Standing in the U.S. Capitol’s Statuary Hall with President Joe Biden, Harris likened the insurrection to 9/11 and the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

One year later, the date already carries the solemnity and infamy of the insurrection. The empty hall stood in stark contrast to the memory of armed attackers desecrating the Capitol—a glimpse, Harris noted, of “what our nation would look like if the forces who seek to dismantle our democracy are successful.

Harris, who was the vice president-elect and a California senator a year ago, recalled her experience that day. Although she had left the Capitol building by the time the gates were breached, “my thoughts immediately turned not only to my colleagues but to my staff,” she said, “who had been forced to seek refuge in our office, converting filing cabinets into barricades.

In his own speech, Biden forcefully condemned former president Donald Trump for inciting the violence at the Capitol, without ever mentioning him by name. “We must be absolutely clear about what is true and what is a lie. And here’s the truth: The former president of the United States of America has created and spread a web of lies about the 2020 election,” Biden said. “His bruised ego matters more to him than our democracy or our Constitution. He can’t accept he lost.

Near the end of her remarks, Harris continued to consider how January 6 would fit into American history—and in so doing, issued a call to action. “I wonder, how will January 6 come to be remembered in the years ahead?” she said.
